FAQ
Is JPEG XL the best image format?
Generally, yes. It is the most capable all-round image format today:
- Smaller files: typically much smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, and almost always smaller than PNG.
- Lossless JPEG recompression: existing JPEGs get about 20% smaller, and the exact original JPEG can be restored.
- Better quality: HDR (PQ and HLG), wide color gamuts and high bit depth (up to 32 bits per channel), so more colors and smooth gradients without banding.
- One format for everything: lossy and lossless, transparency, animation, progressive decoding and very large images.
- Growing support: Apple added it to Safari, iOS and macOS in 2023, Chrome 155 and Firefox 158 open it by default, and more apps and operating systems keep adding it.
- Nothing to lose: a losslessly converted JPEG can be turned back into the exact original at any time if a viewer can't open JXL, and editors and tools such as GIMP, Krita and ImageMagick open and save it.
What makes JXL Convert different from other image converters?
Free, no watermarks. JXL Convert turns images into JPEG XL, the modern format that keeps quality while shrinking file size — right in your browser, no upload to a server.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. Everything is processed on your device. Your images never leave your device.
What quality should I pick?
Starts at 80, which gives small files that look the same. Set 100 for lossless: every pixel stays identical, and JPEGs are recompressed so you can get the original JPEG back, bit for bit. Lower values make smaller files, with changes that become visible as you go lower.
How much smaller are the files?
Typical savings: about 20% for lossless JPEG recompression, 30–80% below quality 100. Actual results depend on the image content and settings.
Can I convert large batches?
Yes. The tool handles multiple files and offers batch ZIP download. Very large images may hit memory limits on some devices.
Can I convert JXL back to JPG or PNG?
Yes, with the JXL to JPG converter or the JXL to PNG converter, which save .jxl files on your device.
