FAQ

Is JPG to JXL lossless?

Yes, at the default quality of 100 (Lossless). Each JPEG is recompressed to JPEG XL without being decoded to pixels, so every pixel stays identical and the file is typically about 20% smaller.

Can the original JPEG be rebuilt?

Yes. A losslessly recompressed JPEG keeps everything needed to rebuild the original JPEG exactly, bit for bit, metadata included. JPEG XL tools such as djxl (libjxl) do that.

What happens if I lower the quality?

Below 100, each JPEG is decoded and re-encoded as lossy JPEG XL: the files get much smaller, but the original JPEG can no longer be rebuilt.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. Everything is processed on your device. Your images never leave your device.

Can I convert JXL back to JPG or PNG?

Yes, with the JXL to JPG converter or the JXL to PNG converter, which save .jxl files on your device.
